You are HERE...

We visited the Yamana Gold website http://www.yamana.com/ and browsed the Company, Operations and then the Investor tabs. We found this a great place to start our journey. We needed to mark our spot. You are here! In true map fashion, we thought it would be fun to be able to identify on a map the major exploration and operational drilling sites. After all this is a mining company, what they do and where they do it matters to us new shareholders.

Today, we focussed on the South American countries. At first, we went with www.google.com/maps. Did, you know that you can pull satellite images as well as topographical photos? So far, so cool. But it wasn't really rich enough in terms of educational content. Oyster and I decided that we should abandon that idea and just google some of the geology terms. And eureka! I just love our teamwork!
We entered our first Yamana term, "GEO". It is used throughout the Press Releases and always in conjunction with production. That may be key. Fundamentals baby! We first need to know what it is...or as one investing guru Peter Lynch described as "investing in what you know". We don't know mining, but with the internet digging is easy. We unearthed the GEO Metro...remember that Chevrolet with the Suzuki engine introduced in 1984? We brought up "Global Environmental Outlook" and "Group on Earth Observations", sounds good but not what we are looking for here. But on the way, we found http://www.nationalgeographic.com/.

What an amazing site! Couldn't resist exploring the territory. Hey, if you have some time you can take the GEO Bee Challenge or check out National Geographic's Atlas Explorer. National Geographic Magazine (NGM) even has a featured "map of the day". Imagine in one year, you can elevate your geography IQ. There is hope for those of us who missed the big '80's geography kick that Uncle Sam pushed through the Department of Education http://www.ed.gov/index.
I didn't realize that I could really be fascinated by reading about land and its relationship to other land! I went ahead and made these cool sites my research favorites. Another fun detour.

We found another specialty dictionary called http://www.yourdictionary.com/ and then there is http://www.onelook.com/ both helpful for looking up industry terms like, "GEO" or "gold equivalent ounces", "azimuth", "mineralization", "ore body" and "leach pads". That is not to say that the standard Merriam-Websters http://www.merriam-webster.com/ won't get you there, but now you have sources when you play your next high stakes round of Geography Scrabble Throw-Down. Did you have any idea how rich your resources really are? And the social bonus to making informed investing decisions is being able to join in on the buzz. Imagine sitting at your local In-N-Out Burger with your twelve year old eating a double double, in his case vegi style, discussing the latest exploration update in Chile and Argentina and whether the production output is on track for 2008. Or in our case, sitting at home at our dining table staring at my scrabble tray and wondering whether or not my new favorite seven letter word "azimuth" is challenge worthy. Hey fifty bonus points! Doubters can go to http://www.morewords.com/.
We not only know where we are...and can see virtually where the metals are coming from...but we are excited to report that in one month we have increased our position to 8.78 shares....woohooo! Go AUY, GO!

Don't throw away the non-descript envelope!

Non-descript envelopes and descript ones!

Okay, so today, I received an email from my INGDIRECT account, the tag line reads, "Get your eStatement and view Bright Spots, your quarterly newsletter". Yeah! Eager to take a look, I tried to log-in to the http://www.ingdirect.com/ site. I am embarrassed to admit it, but I forgot the pin! My son made a couple attempts at even recalling the pin and resorted to calling the rep. Luckily, we called at 7:56pm, they close at 8pm. The representative was especially sweet and helpful to us. I learned that we will not be logging onto the site tonight however, as the pin will be mailed to us in a "non-descript" envelope in five to seven business days.
We decided to take a good look at the newsletter and see what we could glean. One not so stunning "tip" stood out, "To live like you do now, you will need to put away 10% of your salary starting at age 25". It looks like I am 18 years too late! And I am not quite sure that my lifestyle is one that I am particularly looking forward to maintaining. Was rather interested in breaking free of the one bedroom apartment, with the PC on the kitchen table and the faded Arctic blue vintage (hey, its at least 22 years old) BMW parked under the street light.

We also have great news but not sure how to move forward on it. Oyster got nominated at his school to attend an "elite" program offered by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) http://www.cylc.org/. Inside the beautifully appointed envelope with its official gold and blue foil seal, is a letter to the parents and one to my son. So much hoopla, the envelope weighed in at a small cell phone. Now, I am one of those parents who would love to write a check and send him off to Washington D.C. to participate in this "exceptional, interactive program and powerful experience", but is it really? To part with the $1,840 for tuition not counting round trip airfare for 6 days is a bargain right? It is no wonder that the package also included an eleven page "Strategy For Success: A Guide To Community Fundraising." I love the fact that the strategy is two pronged, Plan A-bake sales and Plan B-Find Potential Sponsors. What can you possibly bake in four weeks part-time to raise almost $3,000? Trust me if I knew that now, I would enter the baking business to make a living! So, the alternative is to train up our leaders at a young age to begin a quest for "sponsorship funds" aka begging for money. I guess that is what "leaders" do. Even though we are not asking them to stand on a street corner with a sign, we do it in the name of what? Hmmm. The more I think about this the more I dislike the whole thing. Is this another way to guilt parents and to teach our kids to want things we simply cannot afford with our own money or teach our kids to use other people's money for their gain? Either way, it is not settling well with me right now.

Perhaps, you have another take on this you would care to share with us. Do you know any kids who have personally raised the $625 a week to afford a $500 a day trip? Was the trip worth it? Or is this one of those "Who is Who in America" deals, where you pay nothing to get into the book, but if you want a copy, you spend the bucks, a kind of shrine to self!
Would love to hear from you.

Bienvenue!

We decided to create a blog to document our journey through finance! What makes our journey unique is that my son aka Oyster and me, yes Peanutbutter started learning about the stock market together. We have no money to speak of and a losing lottery ticket that dashed our MacBook Pro and Lexus RX Hybrid dreams. We better learn a thing or two about real finances if we want to go there. Heard about http://www.fool.com/ and Oyster discovered http://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/ . He likes to make it competitive. After a few months of "play money" we clicked on a link and opened our first Orange account at http://www.ing.com/. Now, we are small potatos, actually more like tator tots in our own private Idaho. But the money we put into lattes and lotto's on Main Street could be better spent "growing" on Wall Street. Right?
Here is the deal, I am a single mom with a pre-teen son, and we want to have fun with this whole sheban"k"...teehee. If you are in a similar situation and want to join us virtually, please comment and share your financial journey here. We would love to hear from you!
